Beachman's investing plan: Portfolio review
Portfolio: What I am planning to do in the markets and with my portfolio
Last week, I discussed why we are in a window of opportunity…heightened uncertainty that could create more opportunity.
In times like these, the left side of my brain likes to review the current situation, make lists, draw up plans so that the right side of my brain can take actions that are deliberate, targeted and measurable.
Along those lines…
…today, we will spend some time reviewing the holdings in my portfolio, including what I plan to do with each of them leading into 2025. We will also discuss the handful of stocks that are on my active watchlist for a possible add to the portfolio. Lastly, we will review a few year-end, short term trade ideas that are percolating.
Welcome to the Beachman community, where we follow the most pertinent market signals that you need to know as an investor…AND…the context and the key takeaways for each of these developments.
NOTE: Beachman’s Newsletter has maintained subscription rates steady for the past 2 years. Unfortunately, our costs have increased and we have to raise our prices just a tad in Dec. The new pricing will be published in a few weeks. Rest assured, we strive to keep this publication affordable and ad-free so that we can focus on investing wisely and learning as a community. Beachman recommends
Each week, I share a recommendation for an app, a book, a website, a podcast, a publication, a movie…anything that I find interesting and useful from an investing and financial management perspective. I don’t get paid to do this. Beachman’s Newsletter has and always will be an ad-free publication. So here goes…
Morningstar.com
When it comes to fair market stock valuations, I trust only Morningstar (Mstar) because they update their DCF-based fair market values about once a quarter based on the most recent earnings report. This lines up with how I analyze companies. Mstar does not raise or lower their price targets based on sentiment, press releases or fintwit posts. Additionally, I use Mstar to compare stocks and ETFs to their peers as well as to review ETF holdings. I access their service for free through my local public library. Most US public libraries offer such free online access to Mstar and other publications.
Portfolio performance
As we kick off the last quarter of the year, it is important to take stock of how the Beachman portfolio has performed and to identify if any major changes in approach are needed before year-end. That is the goal of today’s exercise. So let’s start by comparing our YTD return against the major indexes.
As you can see, we are beating all the three major indexes…by a lot. Things got a bit worrisome (relatively speaking) during the Summer, however over the last two months, portfolio returns started accelerating as many of our Aug and Sept buys started appreciating rapidly. More on this later, but I am pleased to see that our Sept and Oct returns were much steeper than that of the Nasdaq and the SP500.
Bottomline, we find ourselves in a good spot with solid returns to date…
…PLUS a healthy cash position that we can now strategically deploy for a year-end push.

Portfolio holdings review
I update the portfolio file every weekend. All %s mentioned are against my total portfolio value, including cash. For more details, refer to my portfolio here. I have written in the past about all my holdings. You can find my previous posts about a specific stock or ETF by using Substack’s search function.
Now, let’s take a closer look at my current holdings and what I plan to do with each of them leading into 2025.
