I watched a beautiful movie last night, "Hearts in Atlantis", a Stephen King coming-of-age story about a 11-year old boy, Bobby, and his two best pals. It is a simple tale about a kid who desperately needs a father-figure in his life, how he meets such a generous man and the life lessons he picked up that Summer.
Mr. Market gave us more food for thought this week. And this is the time when each of us, investors, needs an investing guide or mentor or a trusted friend with whom to bounce around some ideas and thoughts. I am not talking about a subscription service, online forum or fintwit entity that does not know you personally. I am referring to a person in your life whom you trust and who has your best interests in mind, without bias or vesting.
One of my biggest financial mistakes in life was that I did not have or seek such an investing guide when I was in my 30s. If Dad were alive, he would have been that sherpa for me. As a young man, husband and father, I did not make investing wisely a priority. It is only now, later in life, that I see the benefits of having such a mentor.
If you are lucky to have such a person in your life, make some time to talk to them. I am pretty sure that you will feel better after you have done so. You might even walk away from the discussion with a clear-headed mind and a few viable actions for next week.
